"Synthetic Emotion by She’s Got Claws is a rare thing. A concept EP. Manchine has taken the traditional sci fi love story of man creates machine in female likeness and falls in love, but has essentially spun it 180 degrees. The twist here is not just in the reversal of the story line but in the reality of the creation of the music.
Electronic music is dominated by boys and their toys. When they do manage to extract themselves from the techno porn fetish of their machinery, they invariably seem to fantasise about creating fembots. From Fritz Lang to Sorayama, Blade Runner to Ex Machina.
But what about the object of desire itself? We seldom get to imagine the story from the machine.
We do now!
Manchine is no mechanical marionette fronting a male conceived electro project, she is the entire concept. She can imagine the story from the Robot’s point of view. Not as simpering supine sex object, because she is also Victor Frankenstein. Manchine is creator and creation. The singer is the programmer. The creature recreates the creator. The robot remakes the maker.
The four tracks on the Synthetic Emotion EP present a beautiful electronic short story. Minimal production creates a clean sonic punch. Melody and lyric ride confidently on the beats.
The tracks ‘I Die for You’ and ‘Hurtbeat’ are two of the best modern electronic songs you will ever hear.
I cannot diminish this collection by comparing it to any other music. Synthetic Emotion is creative perfection, an end point without obvious parentage or prescient."
